Types of Massage Therapy
Spa Tissue Massage
This massage includes aromatherapy, scalp massage, and hot stone to relax the entire body by rubbing the muscles in long, gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. The benefits of this massage go beyond relaxation by increasing the level of oxygen in the blood and improving circulation and flexibility.
Swedish Massage
A gentile, full-body massage that is ideal for people who:
- are new to massage
- have a lot of tension
- are sensitive to touch
This massage helps release muscle knots, and it’s also a great choice for client’s wanting to fully relax during a massage. For this massage, clothing is removed, though you may choose to keep your underwear on. A sheet will be draped over while lying on the massage table. The massage therapist will move the sheet as necessary to uncover areas of focus during the session. The massage therapist will use a combination of:
- kneading
- long, flowing strokes in the direction of the heart
- deep circular motions
- vibration and tapping
- passive joint movement techniques
Lymphatic Drainage Massage
This massage uses very light pressure and long, gentle, rhythmic strokes to increase the flow of lymph and provide a full flush for the client’s body’s waste management system. This type of massage can help reduce swelling and improve circulation. The lymph system is part of your body’s immune system and helps fight infection. This immune-boosting therapy is ideal for those with toxicity signs – headaches, frequent illnesses, skin issues, headaches, constipation, and fatigue. Lymphatic Massage Therapy provides a full body detox support at the cellular level.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique mainly used to treat musculoskeletal issues, such as strains and sports injuries. It utilizes sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes to target your muscles and connective tissues’ inner layers. This helps to manipulate scar tissue that forms following an injury and reduce tension in muscle and tissue. It may assist in promoting faster healing by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation. This particular massage offers both physical and psychological benefits. Unlike other massage techniques that focus on relaxation, deep tissue massage helps treat muscle pain and reduce stiffness. But it can help the client to unwind mentally, too. An ideal way to prepare for this type, or any massage, is to enjoy a heated therapy session, such as a float session or infrared sauna, beforehand.
Reflexology Massage
Reflexology is recommended for client’s looking to relax or restore their natural energy levels. It’s also a great option if you aren’t comfortable being touched on your entire body. Reflexology uses gentle to firm pressure on different pressure points of the feet, hands, and ears. You can wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to your legs.
Pre-Natal Massage
This massage provides a safe way for women to get a massage during pregnancy. It helps reduce pregnancy body aches, reduce stress, and ease muscle tension. Generally, client’s can get a massage at any time during their pregnancy. However, it is recommended to seek physician guidance before scheduling if a client is in her first trimester. Prenatal massage uses mild pressure similar to Swedish massage. The therapist will focus on areas such as your lower back, hips, and legs. The client can be fully or partially undressed, depending on your comfort level.
